    The Spiritual Emergency Manual.

     (or how to tap into God in the middle of a crisis)

 

 

 

 

All of us at one time or another have circumstances that can seem overwhelming.  We want to be encouraged in God, but feel we can’t hear from Him.  Or we forget where all those promises are in the Bible.  The Bible is God’s promises.  You can believe them as if they were written to you.  If you struggle with that, read , God, UNPLUGGED! to help you decide if the Bible is valid and powerful.  Here are few thoughts to remember in times of crisis.

Don’t FEAR!

It is my experience when troubles come, my mind races to just how bad things could become.  And, despite 99% of those things never happening, I am continually surprised that I still leap to all these negative conclusions.  And God tells us...Just Don’t Do It!

Isa 41:10-13  So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  “All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.  Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all.  For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. 

Ps 46:1-3  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,  though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah.

Isa 35:3-4 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way;  say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” 

Phil 4:4-8  Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable— if anything is excellent or praiseworthy— think about such things.

Ps 27:1
  The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Ps 27:3-6  Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.  One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.  For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.  Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.

Ps 62:1-2  My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

Prov 3:25 Do not be afraid of sudden fear, nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes;  26 For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.  (NAS)

I Jn 4:16,18  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 

God WILL help

Rom 8:28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Heb 6:10-12  For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.  And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end,  that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.  (NAS)

I know there are times where troubles have been my fault. Other times, I feel bad for having ignored Him.  I felt He might have given up on me and these scriptures didn’t apply to me.  I was wrong...

Ps 69:32-34  For the LORD hears the needy, and does not despise His who are prisoners.  Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.  (NAS)

IJn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 

Rom 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 

 

Ps 91:1-16  He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.  He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,  nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.  A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.  You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.  If you make the Most High your dwelling— even the LORD, who is my refuge—then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;  they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.  You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.  “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.  With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” 

Ps 94:14-19  For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.  Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.  Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?  Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.  When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me.  When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

So , what do I do?

James 5:13-20  Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises.  Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;  and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.  Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.  Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.  And he prayed again, and the sky poured rain, and the earth produced its fruit.  (NAS)

Ps 34:4-10 I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear (sic: worship, revere) the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 

Dan 10:12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.

First, don’t fear.  Prayer is the next thing.  Not just words to express your pain, but a conversation respecting His power.  Imagining Him listening (as I talk) helps me to remember that He really is there.  I won’t just be talking AT Him but, TO Him.  Seeking the Lord means we don’t just talk, we open our minds to Hear His perspective.  Respect Him, set your mind to learn and believe (trust, rely on) He loves and listens to you.

A Matter of Faith

Mark 5:35-36, 41-42  While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?”  Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”  —  He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).  Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 

Ps 55:22  Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. 

Notice the requirement is to “cast your cares on to the Lord” AND THEN He will sustain you.  This requires an effort on YOUR part.  FAITH.  Trusting or relying on something you don’t have control over.  How do you know that if you give the Lord your cares, He’ll do anything about them?  FAITH.  You use a form of it everyday.  Eating those leftovers that are a few days old.  Taking drugs (you can’t even pronounce) and trusting your Doctor that it isn’t poison.

Prov 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. 

Your understanding (on which you are leaning) says every-thing is falling apart. DON’T LEAN ON IT. Your understanding lets you down constantly.  Like when you expect someone to act one way, but they do something else. The key in knowing God and receiving His help, REQUIRES you to believe something that isn’t obvious right now.

2 Cor 5:7  We live by faith, not by sight.

Heb 11:1  Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 

Heb 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (KJV)

Mark 11:22-25  “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.  “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” 

JFK said we were going to the moon.  How did he know?  We’d never done it before. But nothing would have happened if NO ONE worked toward it -believing it would work.  He told us we could.  We all believed it and got to work figuring out how to do it.  Here are other examples of faith.

Matt 14:29-31 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Matt 9:28-30  When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied.  Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you”;  and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 

Heb 11:11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.  (KJV)

Lack of Faith = Lack of Results.

Even Jesus could not do many miracles when those He wanted to help wouldn't believe in Him...
