What Does God Say About

Wealth, Riches & Prosperity ?

This is an almost exhaustive reference on wealth, riches and prosperity according to what the bible says, not someone's philosophy.  You can jump to the individual topics with the index on the right - but it is important for you to go through ALL the scriptures to get a balance of what God says about the subject.

Where do I get wealth?

Deut 8:17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."   :18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

1 Chr 29:12 Wealth and honor come from you (God); you are the ruler of all things.  In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

1Sam 2:6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up.  7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.  8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.

2 Chr 32:29 He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches.

Prov 10:22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.

Eccles 5:19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work-- this is a gift of God.

Isaiah 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-- the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,

Phil 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Acts 13:17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country,

Matt 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  :8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.  :9 "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? :10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?   :11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!  :12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Luke 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.

Other sources besides God for wealth:

Prov 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Prov 19:14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Eccles 9:11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

God's idea and blessing of prosperity.

Many have had a notion that being poor was somehow more godly than being rich.  But we see God must not think that since equates BLESSING and REWARD with financial wealth as well as spiritual and emotional wealth.  Otherwise, why we he consider it a gift?

Gen 26: 12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.  13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.  14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.  15 So all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.

Eccles 5:19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work-- this is a gift of God.

Isaiah 30:23 He will also send you rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the land will be rich and plentiful.  In that day your cattle will graze in broad meadows.

Isaiah 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.

Isaiah 60:11 Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that men may bring you the wealth of the nations-- their kings led in triumphal procession.

Zech 3:4 The angel said to those who were standing before him, "Take off his filthy clothes." Then he said to Joshua, "See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you."

1 Tim 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

Ezek 36:11 I will increase the number of men and animals upon you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

God desires prosperity for you.

Many scriptures may seem contradictory.  For the Lord does send poverty and wealth (1Sam 2:7). However, in the New Testament, believers in Jesus Christ are promised that they are no longer under the curse of the law (Gal 3:13).  Therefore, Old Testament scriptures which pronounce poverty or the taking of wealth, no longer apply.  As we will see later though, other factors (including God's will) may prohibit us from financial prosperity.

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-- how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Deut 15:4 However, there should be no poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you,

2 Cor 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

2 Cor 9:11 You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Gen 32:9 Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, `Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'

Gen 39:2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.

Deut 28:63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess.

Jer 29:7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you to will prosper."

Jer 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Gen 1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.  :30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-- everything that has the breath of life in it-- I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

Gen 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Deut 8:18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

Isaiah 61:6 And you will be called priests of the LORD, you will be named ministers of our God. You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast.

Gen 32:12 But you have said, `I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

God desires wealth for His Son.

Rev 5:12 In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb (Jesus), who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

Why don't I have wealth?

From the scriptures earlier, it is obvious God desires us to be blessed, but He is most concerned with our spiritual well-being and growth.  This is shown in the explanation of why God would lead the Israelites into the desert when they had plenty in Egypt.  (Also see "What will steal your wealth" later)

Deut 8:1-11  1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers. 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. 6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land-- a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.

The Lord will - at times - cause humiliation and suffering, only to do you good in the end.

Isaiah 53:10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
