What will steal your wealth?Luke 16:12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own? Prov 5:7 Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. 8 Keep to a path far from her (adultery), do not go near the door of her house, 9 lest you give your best strength to others and your years to one who is cruel, 10 lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich another man's house. Prov 6:31 Yet if he (a thief) is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. Prov 10:4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. Prov 21:17 He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich. Prov 22:16 He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich-- both come to poverty. Prov 23:5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. Prov 28:8 He who increases his wealth by exorbitant interest amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor. (More below) |

Prov 29:3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth. Eccles 2:26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Prov 17:20 A man of perverse heart does not prosper; he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. Prov 28:13 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Jer 10:21 The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered. Prov 28:22 A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him. Jer 15:13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder, without charge, because of all your sins throughout your country. (Jer 17:3 also) 2 Chr 24:20 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, "This is what God says: `Why do you disobey the LORD's commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.'" Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children. How do you get wealth? We've already seen that wealth comes from God. But there are many principles that He blesses. Also see "Giving" Prov 22:4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life. 2 Chr 1:11 God said to Solomon, "Since this is your heart's desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, :12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have." (1Ki 3:11-13) Ps 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Ps 112:1 Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. 2 His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Prov 3:9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Prov 3:16 Long life is in her (Wisdom) right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Prov 8:18 With me (Wisdom) are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. Prov 8:19 My fruit (Wisdom) is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, 21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full. Prov 10:4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. Prov 10:22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. Eccles 2:26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Eccles 9:11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Ezek 28:4 By your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself and amassed gold and silver in your treasuries. Ezek 28:5 By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud. Deut 5:33 Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. Deut 6:24 The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. * Deut 29:9 Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. 1 King 2:3 and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, Prov 11:25 A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Prov 16:20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. Prov 19:8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers. Prov 28:25 A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper. Giving. Many have the idea that Jesus taught poverty as a good thing. Whole sects have been built on this philosophy. Below we see the example of God wanting to be first in our life, only to bless us more because of our sacrifice and giving - even 100 times as much as we've given up! Matt 19:21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." :22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. :23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. :24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." :25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?" :26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." :27 Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" :28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. :29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. Prov 11:24 One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. Eccles 11:1 Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again. Matt 5:42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." 2 Cor 8:7 But just as you excel in everything-- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us-- see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 2 Cor 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 8:2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
Principle of RepaymentLuke 14:12 Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. Matt 6:1 "Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Luke 6:34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even `sinners' lend to `sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. :35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. :36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
How does God measure our giving?Mark 12:41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-- all she had to live on." (Luke 21:1-4) 2 Cor 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. :10 And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. :11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. :12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
Tithing is a New Testament concept.Matt 23:23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-- mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-- justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe (1/10th) into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. 12 "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty.
What will riches do for you?Prov 13:8 A man's riches may ransom his life, but a poor man hears no threat. Prov 14:20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. Prov 14:24 The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly. Prov 19:4 Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him. Prov 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Ezek 27:12 "`Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise. Ezek 27:18 "`Damascus, because of your many products and great wealth of goods, did business with you in wine from Helbon and wool from Zahar. Ps 49:18 Though while he lived he counted himself blessed-- and men praise you when you prosper-- Prov 11:10 When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. What do I do (and not do) when I get it?Deut 8:17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." :18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. Prov 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. Jer 9:23 This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, Ezek 28:4 By your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself and amassed gold and silver in your treasuries. :5 By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud. Luke 16:9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 1 Tim 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. :18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. Wealth does not give you a better position with God (maybe less).Job 34:19 (God) who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands? Prov 22:2 Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all. Eccles 10:6 Fools are put in many high positions, while the rich occupy the low ones. Luke 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. James 1:10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. :11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. James 2:5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? :6 But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?
What's better than wealth?Matt 16:26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Ps 37:16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; Prov 23:23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding. Prov 3:13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. Prov 8:10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Ps 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish. Ps 62:10 Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. Prov 11:4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. Prov 15:16 Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. Prov 22:1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Prov 28:6 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse. Eccles 4:8 There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. "For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?" This too is meaningless-- a miserable business!
